BPBD Monitors Four Areas Prone to Tidal Flooding

The Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) continues to monitor coastal areas of Jakarta that are potentially affected by tidal flooding for 24 hours.

Various anticipatory steps and efforts to handle tidal flooding continue to be carried out in collaboration with relevant Regional Work Units (SKPDs).

Jakarta BPBD Chief Executive Isnawa Adji said that Tanjung Priok Maritime Class I Meteorology Station released an early warning on May 14, 2022, about tidal flooding in the northern coastal area of Jakarta that would be occurred from May 15 to 19. In this release, the maximum tidal peak was expected to occur between 21:00 to 24:00.

According to the release, four areas in northern Jakarta that were potentially affected by tidal flooding were Pademangan, Penjaringan, Sunda Kelapa Harbor, and Thousand Islands.

"We have coordinated with related SKPDs, urban villages, sub-districts, and RT/RW administrators to monitor tidal levels for 24 hours, especially in locations prone to tidal flooding," he mentioned, Wednesday (5/18).

According to him, the tidal flooding was caused by the full moon phase which coincided with Perigee (the closest distance of the moon to the earth). This resulted in a very significant increase in the maximum tidal level.

As of today, the Jakarta Government has been conducting various efforts to anticipate and tackle tidal floodings, such as Jakarta Water Resources (SDA) Agency which had replaced stationary pumps at Muara Angke Reservoir Pump House and prepared mobile pumps at Kali Asin and Muara Karang SDA Unit Posts.

Moreover, SDA Agency had also drained tidal flooding from the pockets in residents' houses in Ancol using mobile pumps when the tide started to recede. If the water level was still high, the residents would be urged to move to the nearest evacuation location, such as the mosque and RW 08 office, Ancol Urban Village.

"If there is a tidal flooding in Ancol, we will drain the standing water in RW 07, Ancol," he conveyed.

He explained that the Ministry of PUPR is currently accelerating the construction of the NCICD embankment in Kamal Muara, Penjaringan, by continuing the work that has been conducted by the Jakarta SDA Agency.

"The permanent embankment construction in Pelindo will also continue this year," he added.

Residents can access information regarding early warning on tidal flooding and water level at the floodgates through BPBD social media accounts (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and Telegram) and website bpbd/jakarta.go.id as well as WAG consisting of sub-districts and urban villages heads and other technical OPDs.

"Hope Jakartans can take advantage of our service at 112, thus we can quickly respond to your complaints," he stated.
